Reader’s Question:

What does temporary car insurance mean?

Chad

Gainesville FL

A temporary car insurance is a type of protection that lasts between 1 day to 28 days or between 1 month to 8 months.  It can give different kinds of protection like third-party liability or comprehensive coverage.  The number one reason why a person obtains temporary car insurance is when leasing or renting a vehicle.  In most cases, the rental company already integrates insurance into the package.  In countries outside of the United States, however,

Car insurance is optional.  Don’t be stingy when traveling in a foreign company.  You should get yourself covered because anything could happen while driving in unfamiliar terrain.  This is more imperative if you are vacationing with your family in a different country.

Moreover, even if the leasing company provides insurance, the protection is usually for the car alone and for third-party liability.  It does not protect the driver and the passengers.  You don’t want to get injured and shoulder all the expenses yourself, right?  Medical expenses these days are soaring and they are the last thing you need on top of your other worries.  Even if the temporary car insurance is only for a day, there is a 24-hour assistance so that when you get involved in an accident, you can immediately get assurance that your needs are going to be met.

Another good reason for getting a temporary insurance is when borrowing a friend’s car even if you have a long-term insurance policy.  This is because when you get into an accident using a borrowed car, the temporary coverage will cover for the damages without drawing on your policy.  This would avoid putting a mark on your long-term policy.  You would particularly find this useful especially when your old policy is up for renewal.

Reader’s Question:

Are there temporary car insurance available in the market?  What types of coverage are available?

Jeffrey

Jackson MS

The insurance market provides all sorts of protection for different driving needs.  Providers understand that while most people would prefer to drive, there are those who only do so occasionally.  In this regard, insurers have crafted the temporary car insurance for people who do not drive a lot, or for those who could not renew yet their long-term plans but need to be covered while driving.

Where can you find temporary car insurance?  Not all companies offer this kind of coverage because most would prefer long-term clients.  The first thing you can do is to call a car insurance broker and ask for help in getting temporary car insurance.  The broker could point you to several companies or even give you several cheep car insurance quotes from different companies.  All you need to do is to choose not only cheaper car insurance but also the one that is more suitable for your needs.  If you do not want a third-party to get involved in the transaction, you can try looking for temporary car insurance online.  Most of the searches though would yield insurers from the UK, so, make sure to include United States when searching for providers of temporary car insurance online.  This way, you’ll get results for insurers in the United States.  Although the UK insurers would be useful if you are planning a short trip to any cities in the UK and would prefer to drive rather than commute.

This kind of insurance provides for different forms of protection.  If you only want protection for third-party liability so that your premiums are low, it is possible to get it.  But if you want to be worry-free while holding the temporary insurance, you should opt for the comprehensive coverage that not only protects you against third-party liabilities but also covers repairs to your car or any injury that you would incur while driving.

Reader’s Question:

I am planning to get a temporary car insurance.  Before I actually purchase one, can you please tell me the benefits I can get from it and how much it will cost me?

Richard

Littlerock AR

It’s a good thing that you inquire first Richard before purchasing one since there might be some things you need to understand first. Well, the benefits that you can get from temp car insurance mainly depend on how long you will be using your car.  I mean, if you only need an insurance to bring your car home and you have not chosen yet the car insurance company you really want, then getting temporary car insurance is the best choice for you. Another reason might be if you are going on a trip or a short vacation with your friends and will switch drivers every now and then, it is best to be insured for the period of your vacation.   Being in a different place while driving a car is a little risky, which means you need protection in case of accidents.  If any of those are your reason why you need one then getting temporary auto insurance is your best bet and you will definitely benefit on it.
Other benefits you can get from temporary car insurance are:

  • You wont have to worry about lapse insurance
  • You can insure your kid who also drives your car for a limited time
  • If you are on a business trip, you can get one if you will be driving someone else’s car

About the price it may cost you, there are some temporary car insurances that are expensive, with some insurance company you can get cheep car insurance.  Sometimes it really depends on the car insurance company.  That is why it is vital to do comparison on the rates. It is also not wise to keep on changing your temp car insurance because it may cost you more than just buying long term car insurance. All in all, before getting temp car insurance think deeply if it is for your advantage, that way you will not spend more money and make sure you have the cheapest car insurance around.

My friend kept pushing me to buy temp car insurance and after sometime I gave in. I purchased one without really knowing how it will help me, can you enlighten me more about this type of insurance?

Sarah

Philadelphia PA

Hi Sarah, I am guessing that your friend is working in a car insurance company that is why she keeps on pushing you to buy one.  Anyway, to answer your question, temp car insurance differs with long term auto insurance only by the length of its coverage.  For this type of insurance you will only insured for a certain period of time, which usually lasts for 2-28 days and afterwards it is up to you if you would want to renew it.  However, keep in mind that this kind is not a substitute for long term insurance. If you are the type of person who does not use car everyday or only use for emergency or a specific month, then it was a good decision on your part to purchase one.

To give you an idea here are some situations wherein you will need Temp car insurance. First is if you want to borrow your friend’s car.  Another one is if you just brought a brand new car and needs to bring it home safely and you are still thinking of the best policy for it.  It will also benefit you if there are any emergency.  If you are test driving your car, then temp car insurance will be useful on your part.

Those are just some of the basic things you need to know about temp car insurance.  After reading this and you think you made a mistake of buying one, then do not worry, that is another advantage you can get from it.  By the way, just a friendly advice, next time try to read or research about it or anything you will purchase in the future, that way you will not have any regrets in the end and you won’t be wasting your hard earned money.
